Why Elderberries?
Elderberries are one of nature’s oldest and most trusted health allies—rich in antioxidants and long valued for immune support. Backed by decades of research, they remain one of the most studied fruits for their broad medicinal benefits. From boosting immunity from cold and flu, to potential anti-cancer, cognition, anti-diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity, and wound-healing properties, elderberries continue to prove their place in modern wellness.
But for us, elderberries mean more than health. They represent a path to reconnecting with the land and creating meaningful opportunities for servicemembers transitioning to civilian life, as well as for farmers looking to diversify with a thriving specialty crop.
🌿 A Multi-Revenue Opportunity
Elderberry is more than just a berry—it’s a plant with year-round earning potential.
- Leaves can be used in skincare products.
- Flowers (May-Sep) are valued for skincare, cordials, and liqueurs.
- Berries (Jul-Sep) bring wellness to culinary and health markets.
- Dormant canes (Dec–Jan) can be cut and sold as nursery cuttings.
This cycle repeats each year, making elderberry one of the most sustainable and profitable specialty crops for growers. Determinant varieties will produce berries and then are done for the season, which is preferrable for commercial growers. Indeterminant varieties will continue to produce berries until early-mid October or until first frost and preferred for backyard growers.
