Pocahontas American Elderberry Cuttings.
The Pocahontas American Elderberry (Sambucus canadensis 'Pocahontas') is a standout cultivar of the native American elderberry, celebrated for its vigorous growth and exceptional productivity. Originating from a wild selection in Pocahontas, Arkansas, this deciduous shrub typically grows 6 to 12 feet tall and wide, though it can reach up to 15 feet in optimal conditions, with a strong, upright habit that forms a dense, bushy structure. Its lush, dark green foliage consists of pinnate leaves with 5 to 11 serrated leaflets, creating an attractive backdrop for its massive, flat-topped clusters (cymes) of creamy-white flowers, which can span up to 24 inches across. Blooming slightly later than other elderberry varieties—typically in mid to late June—these fragrant blossoms draw pollinators like bees and butterflies. By late summer to early fall (August to September), the flowers develop into abundant, drooping clusters of medium-sized (65-70 mg), dark purple-black berries, prized for their rich flavor and high antioxidant content. Ideal for syrups, jams, and wines, the berries require cooking to neutralize mild toxins present when raw. The Pocahontas cultivar is a top choice for both home gardeners and commercial growers due to its prolific yields and adaptability across USDA Hardiness Zones 4-9.
