Wyldewood American Elderberry Cuttings.
The Wyldewood American Elderberry (Sambucus canadensis 'Wyldewood') is a robust cultivar of the native American elderberry, developed by the University of Missouri for its exceptional productivity and disease resistance. This deciduous shrub typically grows 6 to 12 feet tall and wide, with a vigorous, upright to slightly spreading habit that forms a dense, multi-stemmed structure. Its dark green, pinnate leaves—composed of 5 to 11 serrated leaflets—provide a lush backdrop for its large, flat-topped clusters (corymbs) of creamy-white flowers, which bloom in mid-summer (June to July). These fragrant blossoms, attractive to bees and butterflies, give way to heavy, drooping clusters of dark purple-black berries by late summer to early fall (August to September). Wyldewood is prized for its large berries (around 70-75 mg each), high juice content, and rich flavor, making it a top choice for jellies, wines, syrups, and baked goods. Like all elderberries, the berries require cooking to neutralize mild toxins present when raw. With its high yields and adaptability, this cultivar excels in USDA Hardiness Zones 3-9, appealing to both home gardeners and commercial growers.
